Arup, the building services consultant,
and M&E contractor Haden Young have completed work on
two landmark Commonwealth Games developments – the Manchester
Aquatics Centre and the City of Manchester Stadium (pictured).
Located in the centre of Manchester, the
£32 million, state-of-the-art Aquatics Centre contains
four swimming pools and permanent seating for up to 1,500
people, while the 38,000-seat Stadium will be the centrepiece
venue for the games and home to Manchester City FC for the
2003/4 season and beyond.
Climaveneta chillers have been installed
to meet the low noise comfort cooling requirements for both
venues. A single SRAT 1202/SL 300kW chiller serves the Centre’s
air handling units whilst ensuring that operating noise levels
are contained within the strict level of 40 dBa at 10 metres
required for this city installation.
A further two TC/SRAT 1202/SL 320kW chillers
serve the City of Manchester Stadium. Each air-cooled chiller
is located on roof plant rooms at either end of the stadium
to provide the cooling for air handling plant and fan coil
units.
“Climaveneta chillers provided the
necessary acoustic performance for both developments”
explains Neil Phipps from Arup. “At the same time, they
have a good reputation for efficiency and reliability. With
the success of the Aquatics Centre installation, we had no
hesitation in selecting Powermaster again for the flagship
project of the whole Commonwealth Games, the City of Manchester
Stadium.”
